Sen. Reynolds Urges Vote on Cap for Property
Tax Valuations
State Sen. Jim Reynolds said the clock is ticking
on Senate Joint Resolution 5, a measure to cut the growth of annual
property tax valuations. The legislation would let Oklahomans vote
to lower the current property value cap from a maximum of five percent
to three percent.
“The full Senate approved this measure over a year ago, but
we’re still waiting for the House to take action on SJR 5,”
said Reynolds, R-Oklahoma City. “This issue remains a top
concern, not just in my district, but in communities throughout
the state. The voters deserve the opportunity to decide this issue
for themselves.”
In 1996, Oklahoma voters approved a five percent cap on property
value assessments. The intent was to keep annual property valuations
under that cap, but many County Assessors have instead raised property
values the maximum five percent each year.
Reynolds said it is time for Oklahomans to speak up and let their
state representatives know they want the opportunity to vote on
SJR 5.
“I’d urge them to call their representatives right away
and let their voices be heard. This is probably the only way we
will have a vote in the House of Representatives on this measure.”
